Why Work Out?
Maintaining a Healthy Weight

We love dining out, trying new restaurants and haunting old favorites!  Let us know what your favorites are, and we'll share ours.

Tips for dining out and keeping it healthy:

Ask the server to have the chef hold the salt.  Excess sodium causes hypertension.

Ask for sauces on the side, so that you can control how much you eat.  Many sauces are high in fat, sodium and calories.

Ask to have your entree grilled or broiled rather than fried or sauteed.  Why add the extra fat?

Share appetizers and entrees to help limit portion size.  Many restaurants will even divide the food for you.

If someone is coughing near you, ask for another seat.  The 'Swine Flu' epidemic is the real deal.  Avoid being around anyone who appears ill.  The virus is spread primarily by airborne droplets, but can also survive on tables, doorknobs, etc... for at least several hours.

The Grilled Portabella Sandwich at Terry's Turf Club on Eastern Avenue

Being vegetarian doesn't mean you'll miss the fun at Terry's!   Though we're beginning to think Terry doesn't exist, his brother, Scott, always greets the tangle of guests waiting for tables, donned in his colorful bow tie and cherubic smile.  'Terry's' sister, Kimberly, mans the grill.  Though the burgers are usually fried in grease, olive oil is kept on hand, so that Kimberly can accomodate those of us who prefer to be a little more discriminating about how the food is cooked.

The restaurant is a fun, hopping place, where you'll always have a wait for a table.  Plan to relax a while, have a drink, and enjoy the myriad of neon lights.

Pama's December Dining:

Over the holiday period, my husband & I did a fair amount of eating out, but mostly in familiar places. We live in Clifton (an in-town Cincinnati neighborhood near the University of Cincinnati) and visit Tink's Cafe fairly often. For the second year in a row, I had dinner on New Year's Eve there with my neighbors while my husband was away at a football bowl game. Their shrimp and grits is rich, but wonderful -- I recommend ordering the appetizer portion as a entree. I also love the crabcake there. Here's a photo of a salmon dish we also ordered at Tink's.TinksSalmon1209.jpg

A couple days after Christmas, we took my visiting brother and his family downtown to Palomino's. It's part of a chain, but the food is reliable and the setting is lovely.

We also had a quick trip to Louisville in early December, where we ate at Proof on Main, the restaurant in the cool downtown hotel, 21c.

Dining plans on the horizon include a visit to Hugo's in Oakley and Green Dog Cafe in Mariemont.

November 7, 2009

My husband and I just had a great dinner at Virgil's, on Rt. 8 in Bellevue, Ky.  The food is consistently good (the fourth time I've been there), and the waitress was fabulous!  A great sense of humor, unhurried, and quick wit.  My comic friends kept her on her toes.  Think of Virgil's next time you want to eat out.   Mary Ann

Dining experiences we have loved (or not)

10/31/09  York Street Cafe Newport (Kentucky)

Mary Ann had a late night dinner on Halloween with friends and family at the York Street Cafe in Newport.  Saundra Kirsh had the hit of the night, the Dirty Hummus.  It was a warm, layered dish with Kalamata olives on the bottom, a rich layer of hummus, and barbeque sauce and melted pepper jack cheese on the top. It makes my mouth water just to think of it again!

I had the vege burger, a homemade patty served on white bread.  After passing bits of it around for everyone to try, my last quarter landed on my palate for a satisfying, but not quite interesting enough for me, dinner.  Our dinners were served with a wonderful homemade warm whole grain bread.  With a great atmosphere, good prices, and good food, the evening was a success!  Though I'm still on the hunt for the untilmate vege burger experience.

10/24/09  College Hill Coffee Company, North College Hill (Cincinnati)

Mary Ann visited the College Hill Coffee Company with some family on a Saturday afternoon.  The cooks were great and service was pretty good.  I don't think they were prepared to be as busy as it turned out for 4 PM on a Saturday afternoon.  The ambience is wonderful, intimate, warm and cozy, a welcome respite from a cool fall day.  I ordered the 'Wild Mushroom Soup', which was more like a vegetable bulgar soup, not too many mushrooms to be seen.  It was good, just not exactly what I expected.  I was very tempted to check out the black bean burger until they told me it was not homemade.  I would definately go back, just to smell the great coffees and teas!

9/25/09: Honey Restaurant, Northside (Cincinnati)

Mary Ann and Pama happened upon the restaurant's 4th Anniversary weekend. Tonight, they featured their first menu, from the night they opened in 2005. We tried a shrimp entree (over black bean cake--pictured) and mushroom risotto. Terrific! Mary Ann drank a Gott cabernet sauvignon and Pama had a rich Italian red. . . after a "Champagne Martini" to start, and before a cup of spicy Mexican Hot Chocolate instead of dessert. Highly recommended.
